The 3GPP Stage 1 Workshop on IMT2030 Use Cases actually took place on May 8th-10th, 2024, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It aimed to bring together different stakeholders involved in #6G development to define use cases and requirements for the next generation of mobile communication technology. This workshop was organized by the 3GPP SA1 Working Group to bridge the gap between #3GPP and various industry players including research organizations, operators, and ITU (International Telecommunication Union). The purpose was to collaboratively define use cases and requirements for 6G (IMT-2030). The workshop specifically focused on IMT-2030 use cases, which refers to the potential applications and functionalities envisioned for 6G technology. 5G-MAG MEDIA ACTION GROUP have covered in their use cases: 1. Ericsson’s 5G Smart Factory truly shows the power and agility of a private network. Manufacturing of high tech equipment in America using automation and agile processes to continuously improve. The use of millimeter wave for connectivity, transitioning to C-band, used for most of the machinery provides a versatile high bandwidth connection which is a great proof point for private 5G networks. Limiting the handoffs between access points keeps the AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots) moving, increasing efficiency, and allows for constant communication between devices and the data center or control center. The network provides low latency (less than 10 milliseconds), limited handoffs, high throughtput and the flexibility to adjust the process flow without the need to rewire the facility. Businesses and institutions now have another option for network access as more devices and machines connect to the network in warehouses, distribution centers, factories, or campuses which require security and high quality seamless connnections.

The future of wireless services of all types is likely to involve more spectrum-sharing and other more sophisticated approaches to #spectrum assignment and management. This applies to #5G, #6G, #WiFi, #satellite, audiovisual and various classes of aviation and martime networks, as well as government and defence usage. Sharing will occur based on multiple dimensions - location, duration, directionality, power and obviously frequency. That, in turn, will require a range of key enablers, including technological components such as spectrum databases, sensing systems, better transceivers, mapping tools, cross-technology signalling and much more. There will also need to be streamlined regulatory processes, spectrum marketplaces, and a whole variety of use-cases for AI + spectrum. There will also be a need for more international cooperation and (hopefully) eventual harmonisation. The evolution of spectrum-sharing is a central theme for me at the moment, and something that regularly crops up in my discussions with regulators, operators, vendors and investors. I'm really intrigued by Lightyear.ai and its potential impact on the telco sales landscape, especially in the mid-market and enterprise sectors. Their software offers a lot of automation, streamlining telecom procurement, bill consolidation, and network management. It’s impressive how they can simplify processes that usually require a lot of manual work from Sales executives. What do you think? Will Lightyear.ai disrupt the sales positions such as consultants and account executives?

I was quite impressed by this week's European Spectrum Management Conference #EUSpectrum in Brussels, by Forum Europe. Four themes stood out:   1️⃣ After years of silence, there was a refreshing focus on #indoorwireless. While some was a consequence of Wi-Fi Alliance as one of the event’s sponsors, it was a theme that cut across multiple presentations and panels. There was a fractious debate about next steps for the upper #6GHz, discussion of #Private5G (although not much on #neutralhost) & alignment with #DigitalDecade goals for Gigabit connectivity. Also, references to sustainability & lower energy use for indoor systems + FTTP vs. macro RAN blasting through walls. 2️⃣ Spectrum sharing is being taken seriously, especially hybrid-sharing for U6GHz, and enterprise / local spectrum in the 3.8-4.2GHz band. Sharing with & between other technologies and user groups - satellite, military and broadcast - got airtime too. Various regulators and some vendors seem to be onboard (notably Qualcomm), with debate now on "how" rather than "why" - cross-technology signalling, databases, sensing etc, plus trials & specific rules. There's still a lag on "when" though - the EU is moving slowly here. There's a parallel realisation that #6G and #5G Advanced will have to deal with sharing, especially in 6GHz and proposed new 7-8GHz bands. The latter got a very stern presentation from NATO making it clear it's not going to be cleared for mobile use. Basically, Europe needs spectrum sharing. So it should learn to be good at it - and start working fully on it now. Nokia & Ericsson are slow to drop their #5G maximalist positions though (or at least their policy teams). No, outdoor XR isn't a killer reason for more exclusive IMT spectrum. 3️⃣ Everyone is excited about new satellite use-cases and the agenda items for WRC27, especially direct-to-device, but there's plenty of questions over how re-use of existing MNO spectrum to/from space would work in a market with lots of national borders. There seems to be more of a spirit of cooperation - and some sensible regulatory oversight/input - than in many areas of telecoms. One to watch 4️⃣ Various diplomatically-subtle but well-articulated attacks against the European Commission white paper, which with Letta’s report on the Single Market, suggested there should be more centralised control and harmonisation of spectrum #policy across the EU, vs today's powers held by national regulators and 46-country European agency CEPT / Electronic Communications Committee   The EC does not have a stellar record on spectrum – notably strong-arming all EU members into 26GHz mmWave for 5G years early, despite clear signs nobody wanted it. There is huge diversity in spectrum landscapes at a national level (broadcast, military etc), as well as differing appetites for experimentation. Expect plenty of pushback against the proposals. 🔚 In conclusion: A really good event. I'll leave the 5th theme (AI-for-spectrum) for another post.

I spent yesterday at the LS telcom Spectrum Summit, in Lichtenau near Baden Baden in southwestern Germany. LS does a range of products and services primarily for regulators and other government agencies interested in monitoring or managing #spectrum allocations, as well as telcos and enterprises running or deploying wireless #networks of all types. There were various panels and presentations on themes such as: - Outcomes from #WRC23 and insight into behind-the-scenes processes at ITU and national regulators in managing the agenda & onsite negotiations - Spectrum-sharing models, with a particular focus on sharing spectrum with the defence sector, satellite industry and (once more) 6GHz for #5G + #WiFi. There was also a good discussion by Martin Sims of PolicyTracker about whether advances in sharing fit well with current international regulatory mechanisms like WRCs. - Practicalities of #Private5G. There was a speaker and small demo booth from Siemens talking about the uses for Industrial 5G, as well as a network set up onsite in the German 3.7-3.8GHz band - What happens to the UHF band between 400-700MHz in future, especially around the longevity of broadcast TV vs. alternative use-cases - Ongoing work in the UAE to set up a comprehensive system of spectrum-monitoring and a big-data and analytics systems to optimise security & efficiency of usage - A demo of a drone-based monitoring tool and set of applications that can be used by regulators (or others) for deciding what spectrum bands are used in a given area, as well as hunting down any sources of interference. I was speaking on a panel about future models for converged networks, especially around 4G/5G/6G and satellite, Wi-Fi and other technologies. There were also presentations by GSOA about future #5G & #6G NTN integration, and a great talk by Meta about the real-world design & tech challenges in creating AR glasses, blending #WiFi, #Bluetooth and #5G. (Key takeout - use cellular via a tethered smartphone, not in the device itself, when Wi-Fi not available. Latency is less important than you think). As with last week's #EUspectrum event, there was a strong message that the 3GPP community is going to have to get used to more #spectrum sharing in future, especially for #6G, so it better get engaged and take it seriously ASAP. Also it needs to expect pushback on the idea of continual mobile data growth, and closer scrutiny of its demand forecasts. Lobbyists won't get as easy a ride in future. My own presentation is attached - basically I spoke about convergence vs. coexistence, and also the importance of divergence in some settings. I covered #indoorwireless, trains & enterprise wireless, but also noted that "spectrum efficiency" needs to take account of real-world constraints & user behaviour. Thanks to Saul Friedner for the invitatation. This was my 3rd time at the event & was very much worth the rather travel to somewhere quite remote!

LATEST: This 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) paper provides an overview of how security, privacy, and data quality are addressed for C-V2X using mobile network and backend communications, also known as Vehicle-to-Network-to-Everything (V2N2X) solutions. Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything, or C-V2X, is an umbrella term that encompasses all 3GPP V2X technologies, including both direct (PC5) and mobile network communications (Uu). In many cases, both direct and network modes of C-V2X can be used for the same or similar automotive and Intelligent Transport System (ITS) applications, yet with different service characteristics. However, there are fundamental differences when it comes to the architecture and realisation of different Use Cases applying mobile network vs. direct, short-range, communications. This leads to different ways of handling security, privacy, and how to ensure data quality – the fundamental requirements of every ITS service – when using C-V2X mobile network communication or direct communication. This is already reflected in other organisations such as ITS America. The "AI Telco energy savings" paradox AI for Telcos offers amazing efficiencies, such as potentially slicing up to 10%-20 off base station energy consumption. On the other hand, it feeds an ever-growing beast—AI data centers—projected to devour a staggering 25% of US energy by 2030. It's much like turning off the lights to save electricity, only to power a small town with your backyard carnival every night. Getting A/B comparisons running automatically in the minds of all your #OSS evaluators. Are you familiar with David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) and Jason Fried? As far as I know, they've never had anything to do with telco OSS tools, but I do love the clarity of a lot of the concepts they share and in books like, "Rework" (listed in my uncommon must-read OSS books) and "Remote". They've helped bring clarity and a different perspective to the world of OSS for me even though I've never seen them write about OSS directly. Let's take the following quote as an example from a DHH post on LinkedIn: "When Ruby on Rails was launched over twenty years ago, I was a twenty-some young programmer convinced that anyone who gave my stack a try would accept its universal superiority for solving The Web Problem. So I pursued the path of the crusade, attempting to convert the unenlightened masses by the edge of a pointed argument. And for a long time, I thought that's what had worked. That this was why Ruby on Rails took off, became one of the most popular full-stack web frameworks of all time, inspired countless clones, and created hundreds of billions in enterprise value for companies built on it. But I was wrong. It wasn't the crusade that did it. Since those early days, I've talked to thousands of programmers who adopted Ruby on Rails back then, and do you know what virtually every one of them cite? That original 15-minute blog video. Which didn't contain a single comparison to other named solutions or specifically pointed arguments against alternatives. It just showed what you could do with Ruby on Rails, and the A/B comparison automatically ran inside the mind of every programmer who was exposed to that. That's what did it. Showing something great, and letting those who weren't happy with their current situation become inspired to check it out. Because those are the only people who are able to convert to your cause anyway" There are countless crusades currently underway in the world of OSS transformations. Some crusaders are from vendor-land, trying to spruik the merits of the solutions they're selling. Some crusaders are from operator-land, trying to persuade their colleagues of the benefits of those vendor solutions. Others are trying to build a solution (and possibly a career) by being entrusted with building new OSS from the ground up. The challenge though is that there is no perfect OSS solution and there is never a single way that OSS can solve a problem or problem set. Many crusaders are attempting to convert the unenlightened masses by the edge of a pointed argument - pointed arguments against alternatives. At Telecom Infrastructure Partners (TIP) we are building the largest and most prolific global mobile and digital site lease and infrastructure aggregator in history. The reality is that, outside the United States and the UK, mobile and digital site lease aggregation really hasn’t been tried at scale. Only some “low hanging fruit” has been picked by “boiler room” sales types sending term sheets en masse. This is why only hundreds of investments have been made — even in jurisdictions with literally tens of thousands of sites. The UK is the world’s only jurisdiction with professionally licensed mobile site lease advisors: chartered surveyors. This is because, unlike in the rest of the world, renewing and renegotiating site leases is a bit of a cottage industry, historically based on the UK Landlord and Tenant Act 1954. In the UK many leases are renewed based on “Open Market Valuation” rather than mere inflation increases. Often advisors to property owners are in fact paid by the tenants (operators and tower companies) to renegotiate. At TIP we don’t hire salespeople and we don’t do sales training. A sale is when I give you a vacuum cleaner and you pay me. We are, first and foremost, world-wide investment advisors, just like the chartered surveyors in the UK. The fact is that an individual lease is a bad investment. Mobile site lease tenants are the only commercial lease tenants in the world who determine lease rates. In no other area of commercial leasing would the tenant have the gumption to try to set the rates. Mobile site leases can be terminated at will by the tenant, and tenants that stay often try to negotiate the rent down. Some investment! No wonder that no banker in the world will lend against an individual site lease! Luckily, portfolios of sites are GOOD investments (portfolio theory). Bankers WILL in fact lend against thousands of of sites in a single portfolio. Which means that lease aggregators can create significant value in the mobile telecommunications ecosystem. Great news for operators! A more rational CBRS DPA activation methodology has been approved. This will ensure more uptime for broadband fixed wireless providers because channel grants will not be suspended as often. Though there are 15 possible CBRS channels losing one or more does not guarantee that an operator can easily get a replacement or a replacement channel adjacent to other channels. Adjacency is required by many smaller radio vendors to concatenate channels that enable effective broadband speeds and it helps even the efficiency of larger vendors. For those using GAA because they have no PALs or are supplementing their PAL bandwidth with GAA, losing channels forces more users on the remaining GAA channels and thus, interference. This act proves that spectrum sharing is viable and not detrimental to incumbents when deployed with reasonable controls.
